Substance Use Disorder (SUD), also known as substance abuse disorder, refers to a pattern of substance use that causes significant impairment or distress in an individual’s life. These disorders can involve the abuse of alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription medications, or other substances and are characterized by a loss of control over the use of the substance, continued use despite adverse consequences, and a strong urge to consume the substance. They result in a strong desire to use the substance, difficulty controlling use, and negative consequences from substance use, such as problems at work, school, or personal relationships.

Substance abuse disorder can have serious consequences, including physical and mental health problems, decreased quality of life, and financial difficulties. Effective treatment for substance abuse disorder typically involves a combination of behavioral therapies, support from family and friends, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when appropriate.
